KITSCH Gallery with the support of The Rhode Island State Council on the Arts (RISCA) is offering a free bi-weekly workshop on direct animation thru the Spring. Also known as ‘cameraless cinema’, this method of abstract filmmaking involves the direct manipulation of film through scratching, puncturing, painting, and chemical alteration of emulsion, treating each cell as a single frame. will teach the history of cameraless filmmaking as well as the contemporary use of this technique. Working on 16 mm film, attendees will create frame-by-frame animations through painting, scratching, and bleaching. The workshop will include a brief lecture about its history, contemporary use, and animation techniques. As a result of this workshop, participants will create a short experimental film that will later be digitized and screened at KITSCH Gallery in Newport, RI.

KITSCH invites you to a hands-on, immersive workshop on direct animation, taking place every Tuesday and Thursday in the month of May. This free bi-weekly workshop, also known as ‘cameraless cinema’, offers a unique opportunity to learn about and practice the technique of abstract filmmaking. Participants will learn how to manipulate the surface of 16mm film through a range of camera-less techniques, including painting, scratching, bleaching, collage, and masking.
Participants will receive a brief history of camera-less filmmaking, followed by hands-on practice with found footage, original films, and leader to create a well-developed animated film. The goal is to help each participant master the art of articulating movement through the tactile gesturings of this beautiful cinematic language. All materials will be provided.
At the end of the workshop, participants will have produced a finished, projection-ready print, which will be digitized and screened at KITSCH Gallery in Newport, RI. In addition to the hands-on experience, participants will also receive a list of venues to pursue for exhibition, as well as the knowledge to continue working in this practice at home. This intensive workshop is perfect for anyone interested in exploring the world of abstract filmmaking and expanding their creative skill set.
